Helium is NOT flammable; nor is it toxic. Helium is an inert gas.
Because helium does not contain oxygen, inhaling helium can result in suffocation. NEVER breathe in helium—not even in very minute amounts. Inhaling helium from a balloon can result in suffocation, dizziness and disorientation, possibly resulting in a fall and critical injuries. Always transport, store and use helium tanks in a well-ventilated space.
Because helium is stored in tanks under great pressure, it is vital that safeguards be taken to prevent a tank from falling and rupturing. A ruptured tank under full pressure can become airborne and is capable of causing critical injuries. An empty tank also presents a hazard due to its weight and mass; a toppling tank can cause crushing injuries. By law, tanks must be secured at all times to posts or wall anchors with chains, heavy duct tape or rope or secured to a dolly.
