Hollywood isn’t REALLY the center of the universe–it just FEELS like it, especially when it’s time to dish out the Academy Awards! “Oscars” night is fast approaching–the 82nd Annual Academy Awards show airs on Sunday, February 27, and even though “Oscar” is an octogenarian, he’s still hot stuff!
The spectacle actually began very humbly back on May 16, 1929, when a small group (approximately 250!) of Tinseltown’s tinseliest citizens gathered at one of the film community’s most glamorous watering holes, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, for the very first awards program. But there were no TV cameras or gawdy musical numbers; only 15 golden statuettes were awarded. And there was no suspense–no “And the winner is” envelopes–because the winners had been announced three months earlier! And, to top it off, the dinner cost each star just five bucks! A far cry from today’s over-the-top three-ring circus!
The big winners on that first big Oscars night were “Wings” (Best Picture), Emil Jannings (Best Actor) and Janet Gaynor (Best Actress)–quite an honor, considering the “pictures” had only just started talking!
After some newspapers started breaking the news of the winners even before the show had started, the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences decided to pull the plug on pre-announcing the winners, and so the grand tradition of sealed envelopes began in 1941 and continues to this day!
Ever since that first glittering evening in 1929, the Academy has bestowed upon their best and brightest a total of 2,701 Oscar statues! Who will win in 2011? The suspense is killing us! But we only have to wait until February 27!
The Oscars have become THE party theme, and decorating for the big event has become an art unto itself! Party Fiesta Balloon Decor designs the most awe-inspiring balloon decorations for the Oscars and movie parties in general! One look at their balloon statues, balloon movie reels and even balloon popcorn, and you’ll swear it’s time to put your footprints in the cement at the Chinese Theatre!
