On February 3rd, everyone lucky enough to live on Sesame Street (and fans the world over!), celebrated another birthday for our darling little red fella, Elmo! Although he describes himself as being “three and a half years old,” there’s no sense asking how old he REALLY is, because Elmo–like Sesame Street, itself!–is ageless and timeless! (Besides, no one ever really ages on “Sesame Street”! Haven’t those adults in the ‘hood been there for at least 200 years?! Seems like it, anyway!)
No doubt Elmo had a birthday blast with his mom and dad, Mae and Louis; his sister, Daisy; and his beloved pet goldfish, Dorothy! Presents, balloons, cake, music–birthdays are always the best!
But, if you really want to get technical about Elmo’s age, he’s been around “Sesame Street” since approximately 1979, when he was known simply as “Little Monster” until 1981. Some sources say Elmo was born as early as 1972. In fact, one “Sesame Street” staff writer has been attributed with this version of Elmo’s origins: “There was this extra red puppet lying around, and the cast would pick him up sometimes and try to create a personality, but nothing seemed to materialize.”
Well, something DID eventually materialize with Elmo! According to sources, Elmo made his debut as the Elmo we know and love today way back on November 18, 1985! And it’s been a beautiful ride ever since! Elmo and his “Sesame Street” buddies have entertained at least two generations of the world’s children!
So, it’s a sunny day! Let’s sweep the clouds away! Let’s be on our way to where the air is sweet! Any time is a good time to visit “Sesame Street” and to wish a happy birthday to a favorite childhood icon such as Elmo! Happy birthday, buddy! And many more!
