If you know that a “Telecaster” isn’t someone who broadcasts on television and that a “Stratocaster” isn’t some kind of supersonic rollercoaster , then you probably already know that April is International Guitar Month! (And if you don’t know, then that’s what we’re here for!).
For anyone who knows they like guitar music when they hear it, you might also like to know more about the history of the guitar! According to Dr. Michael Kasha, who conducted a major study of this famed musical instrument in the 1960s, a guitar has “a long, fretted neck; a flat, wooden soundboard; ribs; and a flat back, most often with incurved sides.” (Sounds like my date last night!)
The guitar, in its earliest form, is believed to exist for at least the past 4,000 years! In fact, there was even some ancient form of a stringed instrument discovered on an ancient Egyptian wall painting in Thebes in 1420 BCE!
The guitar may have been the superstar of ancient history, but in modern times, of course, the guitar has made superstars of such legendary musicians as Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King and so many more! Who doesn’t appreciate a cool lick off a hit guitar?!
